Country: Brazil, 2012, 52 mins
Synopsis: In a country where Black people are still the victims of social injustice, the ‘FAN (Black Arts Festival) of Brasil’ offers a unique opportunity to reassess the contribution of Afro-Brazilians to their country’s cultural and economic development. Rui Moreira, famous Brazilian dancer and choreographer and the FAN‘s artistic director, guides us in this exploration of the hidden side of Brazil’s so-called “multiculturalism”. Through his own quest for identity, he leads us from the oppressive darkness of the gold mines, where his ancestors suffered , to the dazzling splendour of Recife’s carnival which celebrates the great Black kings of Congo.
